Gaja's 2021 Barbaresco is a stunningly pure and aristocratic Nebbiolo that perfectly reflects the finesse and energy of one of Piedmont's most historic terroirs.
The grapes come from several iconic crus within the appellation, where the calcareous marl soils and cooler microclimates ensure ripe yet extremely refined tannins. 2021 is known for its low yields and high concentration, resulting in a particularly expressive and profound wine.
In the cellar, the grapes are carefully destemmed and vinified in temperature-controlled tanks. Alcoholic fermentation proceeds naturally, followed by a long maceration period to achieve maximum aromatic complexity and structure. The wine then traditionally matures in a combination of barriques and large barrels for over twelve months, after which it further refines in the bottle.
In the glass, the wine displays an enchanting aroma of roses, violets, ripe raspberry, cherry liqueur, and pomegranate, complemented by subtle notes of licorice, clove, tar, and a delicate earthy minerality characteristic of great Nebbiolo.
The palate is energetic and harmonious, with a core of pure red fruit, vibrant acidity, and extremely refined, silky tannins. The balance between elegance and depth is remarkable. The finish is long, complex, and layered, supported by floral nuances and a precise, mineral tension.
This Barbaresco shines alongside dishes such as truffle risotto, vitello tonnato, slow-cooked lamb, mushroom ragout, or elegant pasta dishes based on butter and sage.
