Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin “Cuvée Alexandrine” 2023 is a particularly refined and intense red Burgundy that clearly transcends the classic village level. On the nose, the wine combines ripe cherry, wild raspberry, and dark berry with floral notes, fine spices, and a subtle chalky undertone. On the palate, it is concentrated but never heavy, with great depth, a silky texture, and a remarkably precise structure. The fruit is ripe and pure, the tannins are fine and perfectly integrated, and the mineral tension keeps everything taut and energetic. The finish is long, layered, and exceptionally elegant, with great detail and a beautiful combination of suppleness and seriousness.
Vinification.
Cuvée Alexandrine is a special selection within the domain's range, crafted from exceptionally small, concentrated berries with millerandage, originating from old vines in various plots of Gevrey-Chambertin. These naturally small berries provide extra concentration, structure, and aromatic intensity. The wine is destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts, then aged in oak barrels, with a significant proportion of used wood and a limited amount of new wood. This upbringing adds additional layering and texture without dominating the fruit or terroir expression. The result is a Pinot Noir with remarkable finesse, concentration, and precision.
The Domain.
Domaine Marc Roy is a small but highly regarded domain in Gevrey-Chambertin, now managed by Alexandrine Roy, the fourth generation of the family. The domain spans only a few hectares, mainly in Gevrey-Chambertin and partly in Marsannay, and is known for wines that aim for finesse, transparency, and terroir expression rather than power or extraction. The house style is precise, refined, and very Burgundian, with great attention to detail in both the vineyard and the cellar.
In terms of sustainability, the domain employs a distinctly careful and hands-on approach in the vineyard. The soils are plowed instead of chemically cleared, with the aim of fostering more active soil life, deeper root penetration, and a clearer expression of the calcareous subsoil. There is a strong emphasis on manual labor, precise plot monitoring, and maintaining as natural a balance as possible in the vineyard. This approach is clearly organically inspired and fully focused on healthy vines, living soils, and the purest possible translation of the terroir. In the cellar, the working method remains restrained and precise, ensuring that the character of each cuvée emerges clear and unfiltered.
