Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin "Clos Prieur" 2022 is an elegant and characterful red Burgundy that beautifully combines ripe fruit, finesse, and a distinct mineral tension. On the nose, red currant, raspberry, cherry, and plum emerge, complemented by floral notes, fine spices, and a subtle stony accent. On the palate, the wine is precise and harmonious, with a beautiful core of pure fruit, a lively freshness, and fine tannins that provide length and detail. The style is not massive, but rather refined and layered, with a long finish where fruit, spice, and terroir beautifully converge.
Vinification.
Clos Prieur is considered one of Gevrey-Chambertin's finest lieux-dits, located on soils with iron-rich clay over limestone, which gives the wine both depth and tension. The wine comes from old vines, is destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts, and ages in oak barrels, primarily used wood with a limited proportion of new wood. This approach adds extra texture and depth without overwhelming the fruit or terroir expression. The result is a Pinot Noir with suppleness, precision, and a beautiful chalky tension in the finish.
The domain.
Domaine Marc Roy is a small but highly regarded estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, now run by Alexandrine Roy, the fourth generation of the family. The estate covers only a few hectares, mainly in Gevrey-Chambertin, and is known for wines that prioritize finesse, transparency, and terroir expression. The style is precise and refined rather than powerful or heavy, with great attention to detail in both the vineyard and the cellar.
In terms of sustainability, the estate works with a pronounced hands-on approach in the vineyard. The soils are plowed instead of chemically cleaned, with the aim of deeper rooting, a more active soil life, and a clearer expression of the calcareous subsoil. There is a strong focus on manual labor, low yields, and careful monitoring of the plots, with as few unnecessary interventions as possible. This approach is strongly organically inspired and fully aimed at healthy vineyards, vibrant soils, and the purest possible translation of the terroir. In the cellar, too, the working method remains precise and restrained, so that the origin of each cuvée remains clearly legible.
