Sancerre “Mosaïque Calcaire” 2023 is a precise, terroir-driven Sauvignon Blanc that focuses primarily on chalky tension and bright fruit expression. The nose reveals notes of ripe lemon, lime, green apple and elderflower, complemented by wet stone, chalk and a subtle saline touch. On the palate, the wine is crisp and energetic, with a pure core of citrus and white stone fruit, vibrant acidity, and a dry, mineral finish. The aftertaste is fresh, chalky and very pure.
Vinification.
The grapes are hand-harvested and gently pressed. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, with minimal intervention to preserve the character of the fruit and the calcareous soils. The wine then ages for about 8 to 10 months on fine lees, in a combination of tanks and large, neutral wooden barrels (500–600 litres) to impart texture without pronounced oak influence. After bottling, a short period of bottle rest follows to allow the wine to integrate beautifully.
The domain.
Domaine Claude Riffault is one of Sancerre's absolute top producers and is known for its precise, parcel-driven style. The domain works organically, with great attention to biodiversity, soil health, and manual work in the vineyard. In the cellar, intervention is kept to a minimum: natural yeasts, gentle handling, and an upbringing that prioritises tension and terroir. "Mosaïque Calcaire" is the elegant, chalk-driven entry point to the house style, with surprisingly much depth and ageing potential.
