Izar-Leku 2021 is a remarkably precise, Atlantic-influenced sparkling wine with a distinct maritime character. On the nose, fresh citrus zest, ripe pear, and white stone fruit are intertwined with saline notes, wet stone, and a subtle yeastiness. On the palate, the wine is crisp and energetic, with fine bubbles, high freshness, and a clear chalky and sea-air tension. The finish is long, dry, and mineral, with a lingering saline accent that makes the wine both gastronomic and refreshing.
Winemaking.
The base wine is made from grapes grown in vineyards just above the ocean in Zarautz. After the second fermentation in the bottle (traditional method), the wine ages for approximately 30 months sur lie in the bottle, which provides extra texture and complexity. The wine is released without dosage (brut nature). Any bottle aging after disgorgement is not specified.
The domain.
Izar-Leku is a project dedicated to sparkling wines from the Basque coast, using grape varieties that naturally provide high acidity and tension. The vineyards are literally situated above the sea, on clay soils with streaks of slate and basalt, contributing to the distinct mineral and saline profile. The approach focuses on precision and origin, with a clear emphasis on careful vineyard work and preserving the natural freshness of this Atlantic microclimate.
